A stroopwafel (pronounce strope-wa-fell) is a famous Dutch treat. The inventor of the pizzelle iron is believed to be Bernardino Vitantonio, who was born in the Italian town of Cancello Arnone in 1892. Pizzelle are therefore thin and round cookies with patterns on their surface. The iron heats cookie dough to produce crisps cookies, it also imprints a pattern on the surface of these cookie. This is because anise has been used as a medicinal herb in the Mediterranean region since Ancient Egyptian times to treat digestion issues, respiratory problems and as a carminative.
